My rant against "Crash"

"Crash" is a new film coming out (this weekend, I believe) about a random group of strangers in L.A. who get caught up with each other one night. It's played by a long list of big-name stars. I haven't seen it yet, but have read a few reviews. The story is about racism and how all the characters are both victims as well as perpetrators of it. That's a fine, solid premise cuz most race-related films seem too one-dimensional to me.

Now for my rant. The filmmakers seemed to have gone to great lengths to cover the general population of white, black, brown, etc characters. But considering how large of an Asian population there is in L.A. they didn't seem to try very hard to include yellow. Apparently, there are two Korean characters. From what I've read, they don't seem to have very significant roles in the film. Nor are they on the list of starring actors, so they probably have supporting roles at best. The absence of Asian faces is a widespread problem in U.S. cinema, unless you count the tired old portrayals of us as martial arts masters or illegal immigrants with fake-ass accents. I plan on seeing "Crash" and will post a more informed critique of it afterward. But I have my doubts at this point.

Just saw this film. It really is a complex look at racism in the U.S. Good script, acting, and music. Highly recommended. But the Asian characters are quite limited though. Basically a FOB Korean couple that you see for a few minutes throughout the whole film. And there's also a sub-plot about the smuggling of illegal immigrants. Could be perceived as stereotyping about Asian issues, but at the same time, the characters are victims of racial slurs by all sorts of other characters, which is sort of the point of the film.

I heard it was really bad, actually.

All the people of color went unredeemed and all the white folks were angels. (over-stating what was said to me)

No, that was definitely not what I got out of the film. The Korean couple turns out to be a despicable pair, and the last scene with Asians in it is somewhat cheesy. But since none of these characters had leading roles, there wasn't much room to flesh them out anyway. But for the rest of the characters of color, there are plenty of redeeming qualities, which are conveyed at different points in the story, depending on the character.

The reason the person you spoke with interpreted it the way s/he did might be because most of the white characters' bad sides are presented first and then broken down over the course of the film. On the other hand, the most likable white character turns out to do the worst thing in the end. Writer/director Paul Haggis did this intentionally to show that there is always another side to an individual. Often times, even we're not aware of this other side in ourselves.

Everyone on this tribe should see this film so we could get a longer discussion going.
